Maryland Convent School Wins 8th Pedachess All Primary School Chess Championship!

PEDACHESS All Primary School Chess Championship
Rounds: 5 rounds Swiss Pairing
Time Control: 30minutes
Date: 18th – 19th October 2016.
Venue: Chrisland School, Opebi, Lagos, Nigeria
Chief Arbiter: Oyeleye Olawale
The long awaited All Primary School Chess Championship was finally here and was a total success. The 8th Edition of PEDACHESS All Primary School Chess Championship which commenced on 18th October 2016, ended the playing session on the 19th October 2016 at Chrisland School Opebi. The presentation of prizes to both teams and individual boards was done on the 22nd October 2016 at the same venue.
The tournament was an annual event but because of the view of the directors who wants an international standard of chess event made it biennial. What are the improvement over the past editions?
The introduction of Chess Clocks! In the previous editions, a wall clock time is used to time the pupils for general play. At the end of the set time, pupils are told to stop. A player that was not able to checkmate opponent at the stop time, would be scored by the number of pieces captured. The disadvantage to this kind of condition is this: lets say player A has sacrificed one of his pieces for a better advantage in dynamic play and was stopped before he could totally execute his plan against player B, then he loses a game he would definitely win if allowed few more moves.

Pedachess in other to address this shortcoming decided to buy clocks for pupils. Due to not much available funds, they couldn’t achieve this feat but were able to buy 60 clocks which were set on the 1st 10 boards (note: 1 board comprises of 6 players),
Another improvement was the introduction of recording sheets for all pupils. They had to play and record their moves. Some pupils recorded perfectly well while some couldn’t, though recording was not compulsory.
The Sponsors of this tournament which is arguably the largest tournament for primary school kids in Africa bringing in 600pupils playing chess under one roof are Pedachess Educational Services Ltd, Chrisland Schools and Professor Abisogun Leigh Chess Foundation.
Professor Abisogun was there to give the opening speech on Tuesday to all participants. “The Future of Nigerian Chess is Here”.
