The 19th National Friends of Chess ended successfully on the 11th of December 2018 but the awards ceremony was shifted to 11a.m, 12th December 2018. This was due to the following facts:
- Chess event didn’t end on time
- Insufficient medals for winners
To make matters worse, today at the closing ceremony, the medals were not enough to go round the winners. Some of the winners will not take their medals home but were promised to get them through their state associations. According to those that had participated in the festival before, this same thing happened at the last two editions. Some teams didn’t get their medals at the closing ceremony but they got it at the stipulated time they were promised through their state associations. This is not the fault of Nigerian Chess Federation but the whole National Sport Festival Organizing committee at large.
As at the 11a.m today, most of the players that won individual medals were not around. The closing ceremony started without them hence those players not around were represented by another player who might or might not be from their team. At a point, there was a lady collecting medals on behalf of 5-6 different winners of different states. The public who would be opportune to watch the closing ceremony live or replayed will begin to wonder how one face ended up playing for different states, answering to different names, receives different medals in a single Chess Event at a whole National Sports Festival. Many coaches and players present are of the opinion that It would have been a better idea for the coaches who were around to collect on behalf of their players be it male or female and in a case where both player and coach are absent, then the spot should be left blank. Players not around during closing ceremony is bad for publicity of chess. It shows total unseriousness from the players who don’t deem it fit to attend. Kudos to the players that attended despite all odds and prompt to time.
The president of Nigerian Chess Federation Mr. Lekan Adeyemi who is also the world government body of chess (FIDE) Vice President was present to decorate the winners of this tournament.
