Under 20 Years Old FM Anwuli Daniel Wins 9th Maxton Suite Chess Blitz Tournament

Under 20 FM Anwuli Daniel wins Maxton Suite Blitz Tournament on Nigeria’s Independence Day
As Nigeria was celebrating Independence day, The 9th edition of Maxton Suite Blitz Tournament was scheduled for the same day. 37 players came to compete for prizes, rating and to have fun celebrating Independence at the same time! The tournament started one full hour behind normal schedule due to player’s not coming on time for registration and some believed the tournament would start at the usual time 2:00pm as before. The tournament started for 2:00pm sharp and ended for 6.00pm an hour later than scheduled.

There was an increase in sponsorship in this edition by Mr. Robert Asibor who pledged a N5,000 to a lady that defeats a player rated above 2000.

Bennet Essom, Agbazue Precious, Oladimeji Timilehin, Akintoye St. Emmanuel

Play Chess for the Orphan was initiated by Mr. Bennet Esom whose idea was borne out of the fact that he is a fan of both kids and the game of chess. A portion of his salary was supposed to be dedicated to the orphanage monthly but he wasn’t consistent but was very consistent with chess playing. Then it occurred to him, why not marry them both by using chess to raise funds for the kids and make the consistency cut across all. So here we are, playing chess, sacking officers, checkmating opponent and raising funds for the orphans in the process. Everyone is welcomed to join them every weekend @ 16 Nnobi Street, Surulere, Lagos.

They sponsored the tournament by providing N5,000 to the best under 20years old in the tournament.  Four players tied for the prize. Agbazue Precious, Oladimeji Timilehin, Omojola George and Akintoye St. Emmanuel.

Round 5

The Lucena position is a theory that every professional chess player knows by heart. A little slip and you have lost. This was exactly what happened between 2 times winner of Maxton IM Adu Oladapo and Anwuli Daniel in their encounter on board 1. We couldn’t get the actual position where IM Adu Oladapo slipped.FM Anwuli Won to lead the pack.

Adewole Adeyinka also defeated Fabeyo Frederick and another shocker was Efemuai Odafe defeating IM Aikhoje Odion making him lost 3 games in a row while unrated Under 20 Akintoye St Emmanuel defeated Menkiti Patrick (1811)

Round 7

There was a little controversy on Balogun Oluwafemi’s game and Anwuli Daniel. IM Adu Oladapo claimed the game was drawn but seems there was an agreement reached between the duo making FM Balogun Oluwafemi giving the game to Anwuli Daniel.  There was a post about it on facebook but we couldn’t get hold of it for it has been deleted. Thought the era of dealing games in tournament have long gone. Till then, Anwuli Daniel won the game!

Ajibola Olanrewaju lost a better position to IM Adu Oladapo in this round. There was a little bet on the side between Charles Campbell and Efemuai Odafe at the beginning of the tournament. Whoever finishes better than the other gets N20,000. They meet in this round with equal points but CM Charles Campbell defeated the Nigerian Oracle.

Adewole Adeyinka still waxing strong defeated Abuldrahman Abdulraheem in this encounter!

Also of note is Obioma Onuoha defeating Fabeyo Fredrick.

The last round of the event was very interesting. 2 players lead the pack. IM Oladapo Adu and FM Anwuli Daniel. Both players have met in an early round so can’t meet again. Hence IM Oladapo Adu faced Adewole Adeyinka while FM Anwuli Daniel was paired against Ewi Yemi. Both players need to win their games to tie for the first position.

Adewole Adeyinka played beautifully but eventually drew IM Adu Oladapo stopping the later from getting the first prize.

Coming 3rd was Balogun Oluwafemi who defeated Ajele Rotimi

Samson Peace defeated Fabeyo Frederick rated 2113 hence winning the N5000 bounty placed on any above 2000 rated player that gets defeated by a lady….courtesy of Mr. Robert Asibor.
